Start with what you actually need

Most people looking for a cabinet maker on the Gold Coast are in one of three situations. They are different jobs, and knowing which one you are in makes the quote more useful.

    You want a new kitchen

New cabinets, a new layout, a new benchtop, or all three. A kitchen is the biggest cabinet job in most homes, and the quote depends on the layout, the materials and what has to come out first. Kitchens on the Gold Coast

You want storage built to fit a room

Built-in wardrobes, a walk-in robe, a laundry, shelving or a media wall. These are made to the size of the space, so the cabinet maker will want to measure before quoting.

You are not sure what you need yet

Describe the room and what is not working. A cabinet maker can say whether it is a kitchen job, a joinery job, or something smaller, and the form below takes as much or as little detail as you have.

    Joinery on the Gold Coast

Joinery is the built-in timberwork in a home that is made to measure rather than bought off the shelf: built-in wardrobes, shelving and bookcases, media and entertainment walls, window seats, study nooks, laundry cabinets, bar and butler's pantry fit-outs, and vanity cabinets. On the Gold Coast the words joiner and cabinet maker are used for much the same trade, and many businesses do both.

What makes a joinery job different from buying furniture is that it is designed for one space. That means the cabinet maker needs the measurements, what the piece is for, and how it meets the walls, floor and ceiling. A rough sketch with dimensions is a good start.

Tell us what you want built and roughly where it goes, and we pass it to a local cabinet maker who does joinery.

    Wardrobes and built-in storage

Built-in wardrobes are made to the width and height of the wall, so there is no gap above or beside them, and the inside is planned around what you store: hanging space, drawers, shelves and shoe storage. A walk-in robe is the same idea for a whole small room.

The main choices are the doors (hinged, sliding or none), the finish, and the layout inside. If you know how much hanging space you need and how many drawers, say so in your enquiry.

    What a good quote covers

Quotes for the same job can differ because they cover different things. Whoever you hear from, it is worth asking:

    • What is included: the cabinets, the benchtop, removing the old ones, installation
    • What the cabinets are made of, and whether the cut edges are sealed
    • Who supplies and fits anything that is not the cabinets, such as the benchtop or appliances
    • Whether the time quoted covers making the cabinets as well as the work in your home
    • What happens if the job changes once work has started
    • Their QBCC licence number, and whether the job needs a written contract

The detail on contracts, deposits and licensing, and published price ranges for Gold Coast kitchens, are on the kitchens page.

    Where we cover

The Gold Coast, from the northern suburbs down to the southern end, including Southport, Nerang and Burleigh Heads. If you are somewhere else in south-east Queensland, tell us where, and we will say straight away whether we can find someone.

What to include when you enquire

The more specific you are, the more useful the quote. Worth including:

    • The room, and roughly how big it is
    • Whether it is new work, a replacement or a repair
    • Whether you have a layout, drawings or photos, or just an idea
    • What you want it made of, if you have a view
    • Anything unusual about access, timing or the state of the room

You will not know all of it, and that is fine. A cabinet maker will want to see the room before pricing it properly.

    Common questions

What is the difference between a joiner and a cabinet maker?

On the Gold Coast the two are used for much the same trade: made-to-measure cabinets and built-in timberwork. Some businesses lean towards kitchens and some towards wardrobes and other joinery. Describe your job and it goes to someone who does that kind of work.

Is a custom kitchen different from a flat-pack kitchen?

Flat-pack cabinets come in standard sizes and are assembled and fitted from parts. Custom cabinets are made to the size of your room. Which suits you depends on the room, the layout and the budget, and a cabinet maker can tell you where each makes sense. More on kitchens on the Gold Coast.

Does the cabinet maker need a licence?

In Queensland, building work valued over $3,300 needs a QBCC licence. Ask for the licence number before you agree to anything, and check it with the QBCC. The details are on the kitchens page.

    Do you give prices?

We do not quote or set prices. The kitchens page shows price ranges for Gold Coast kitchens that other publishers have put out, with where each comes from. Your price comes from the cabinet maker once they have seen the room.
